A Winston-Salem minister is calling for churches to begin security ministries to protect their congregations from violence in the aftermath of the shootings in Charleston, South Carolina.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports that the Rev. Sir Walter Mack Jr., the pastor of Union Baptist Church on Trade Street, described the shooting in Charleston as an atrocity.

In the wake of the attack, Rev. Mack is calling for all churches to begin security ministries to protect their congregations from violence. His church began its security ministry eight years ago.

According to Rev. Mack, the ministry consists of retired police officers and sheriff's deputies and other volunteers. Two Forsyth County deputies are stationed at Union Baptist for its Sunday services.

Charleston police identified 21-year-old Dylann Roof as the suspect in the fatal shooting at Emanuel AME Church, which killed nine people. Authorities arrested Roof near Shelby, N.C., Thursday morning.
