Teenage suspect in Winston-Salem homicide was wanted for 2022 shooting crime

An arrest has been made in a deadly downtown shooting in Winston-Salem. The suspect was wanted for another shooting crime nearly six months ago.

In the early morning hours of Monday, police responded to a call near the corner of Burke and West 1st streets in Winston-Salem, where a large fight broke out with gunshots fired. Upon arrival, officers found Quante Donnell Wilder suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in front of Gatsby’s Pub. Lifesaving efforts failed and he was pronounced dead.

Following an investigation, Nehemiah Chandler was identified as a suspect, and charged with murder. He’s being held without bond at the Forsyth County Detention Center.

In September of last year, a then 18-year-old Chandler was identified as a suspect in a crime in Kernersville that ended with one shot being fired and non-life-threatening injuries. According to the Winston-Salem Journal, he was to be charged with Felony Discharging Firearm Into Occupied Dwelling and Misdemeanor Injury to Personal Property.

Monday's shooting death was the 13th homicide in Winston-Salem for 2023, surpassing a total of nine at this time last year.

*Correction: A previously broadcast version of this story in one instance identified the shooting as occurring on Thursday. The shooting occurred on Monday.
