Board members of Greensboro's beleaguered civil rights museum are being asked to dig into their own pockets to pay the salary of their new chief fundraiser. They've been asked to put together $31,000.

The money is being used to cover pay and benefits for Bay Love, the chief operating officer and director of development for the 22 year-old museum. The museum hired Love in March.

According to the Greensboro News and Record, board chair Deena Hayes-Greene and board member Ron Milstein made the pitch to fellow board members in an email last month.

The museum has other financial issues as well. They are late with $30,000 in property taxes and must repay $700,000 on a bank loan by July.

Milstein said Monday that the board made a strategic decision to hire Love before paying off those other debts so he could start raising money quickly.
