Senate Candidate Debate Draws Sharp Differences

Senate Candidate Debate Draws Sharp Differences

11:54am Oct 08, 2014

U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan (D-NC) and Republican rival Thom Tillis challenged each other again on what to do about the new terror threat overseas and they differ on gay marriage in North Carolina.

Hagan told Tillis at their second debate Tuesday night he's waffling on what he would do about eliminating the Islamic State militant group. The state House speaker says Hagan allowed President Obama to withdraw troops too quickly from Iraq and created a vacuum.

Tillis defended his decision this week to intervene in lawsuits challenging the state's gay marriage ban that voters approved in 2012. The ban could soon be overturned because the U.S. Supreme Court chose not to consider a Virginia case.

Hagan says she opposed the constitutional amendment and pointed out Tillis got it on the ballot.

They debate again Thursday, this time including Libertarian candidate Sean Haugh.
