Incumbent Bill Schatzman defeated two challengers Tuesday to win the Republican nomination for  Forsyth County sheriff.

Schatzman defeated challengers Dave Griffith  and Clif Kilby. Schatzman won 52 percent of the vote, Griffith 40 percent and Kilby 8 percent.

Griffith was once Schatzman’s chief deputy but the sheriff fired Griffith in 2006. Griffith also ran against Schatzman in 2010, getting about 6,400 votes compared to about 7,600 for Schatzman.

Turnout was higher this year, with almost 20,000 total votes cast.

Kilby retired from the sheriff’s office three years ago. While campaigning in Lewisville Tuesday, he talked about being a newcomer in a race against two well-known opponents.

With no Democrats on the ballot, Schatzman will run unopposed in November’s general election.
