Sauratown Mountain wildfire has consumed more than 800 acres but is mostly contained

The wildfire on Sauratown Mountain in Stokes County is almost fully contained, according to state fire officials.

The North Carolina Forest Service says the fire was almost 90 percent contained as of Sunday night.

The wildfire has burned more than 800 acres.

Crews are now mostly working on mop-up and rehabilitation efforts, using hand tools to search for hot spots along the containment line. They’re also using grass seed and straw on the steep terrain and near streams to deter water runoff.

There have been no injuries, but one major structure and one minor sustained minor damage.

Fire officials say weather conditions — high winds and low humidity — pose a risk for new wildfires. The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for much of the High Country warning of wind gusts that could reach 30 miles per hour.
