Rowan County commissioners want to continue opening their meetings with a prayer. They have decided to appeal a federal judges ruling telling them to stop.

The board voted unanimously Monday to appeal the decision which involved its prayer practices from 2007 to 2013.

The Salisbury Post reports U.S. District Judge James Beaty Jr. ruled that the way the commissioners opened meetings with prayers violated the U.S. Constitution's prohibition against mixing church and state. The commissioners themselves delivered prayers before their meetings.

Rowan County Sheriff's Office Chaplain Michael Taylor gave Monday's opening invocation. His prayers have been similar to those offered by commissioners after the initial lawsuit was filed. Taylor has used specifically Christian works in his prayers.
