Voters are deadlocked between Republican Thom Tillis and Democrat Kay Hagan one week away from the election, according to the latest High Point University poll.

The last HPU poll before North Carolinians decide the U.S. Senate race on Election Day shows Hagan and Tillis tied at 44 percent each. Another 5 percent support Libertarian Party candidate Sean Haugh, with 3 percent listing others and 5 percent undecided.

In this poll and the last two released by High Point University, the results are within the margin of error for the surveys, indicating that the race is too close to call.

According to the High Point Enterprise, the race between Hagan, the first-term senator from Greensboro, and Tillis, the state House speaker, may tip the balance as to whether Democrats continue to control the U.S. Senate after the Nov. 4 general election.

TV, radio and internet audiences have endured an onslaught of ads by both candidates and outside political groups trying to sway voters. The Center for Responsive Politics reported earlier this month that spending in the North Carolina Senate race could reach $90 million by Election Day.
