The U.S. Supreme Court is currently considering arguments over the legality of President Joe Biden’s proposed federal student loan relief program. The decision will affect nearly 200,000 eligible people in northwest North Carolina.

The U.S. Department of Education has compiled data on borrowers by congressional districts. A total of over 75,000 applications have already been approved in North Carolina’s 5th and 6th Districts.

The 5th District is represented by Republican Virginia Foxx and the 6th by Democrat Kathy Manning.

Biden’s plan would offer $10,000 in relief for those who earn less than $125,000 per year. Pell Grant recipients are eligible for additional cancellations up to the same amount.

Regardless of the court’s ruling, observers expect student debt relief to be a campaign issue in upcoming elections as young college-aged voters make up a key bloc of the Democratic Party’s base.
