The North Carolina Transportation Museum in Rowan County is getting more than $2 million for renovations. State officials have announced the first phase of the renovation will focus on the old powerhouse.

Interim Museum Director Kevin Cherry says they will start by restoring the structural integrity of the building, constructed in 1896. The building originally provided power to Southern Railways' repair facility for steam-powered trains as well as the town.

The repair facility became a museum in the 1980s. The powerhouse building was damaged in a 2010 tornado.

The first phase of the renovations is being funded with $1.6 million in state funds and $600,000 from the museum foundation. The work is expected to be finished later this year.
