The U.S. Department of Labor has awarded a $6 million grant to North Carolina State University. The money will be used to fund apprenticeship programs in the artificial intelligence industry.

A new project led by NC State will support 5,000 workers with training, college coursework and certification to work in the emerging AI field.

The school's apprenticehip program is one of 28 funded nationally that will allow workers to gain job skills without needing a four-year degree.

According to a news release, the apprenticeships will be geared toward information technology workers who are currently unemployed or seeking a new tech career. The program will also target underrepresented workers and people in the military.

The federal grant was announced at a conference on Tuesday attended by U.S. Secretary of Labor Eugene Scalia, as well as several state and university officials.
