Emergency Hearing Scheduled In NC Voter Case

An emergency hearing has been scheduled in federal court on the NAACP's attempt to stop several county boards of election in North Carolina from removing people from the voter rolls through challenges filed by individuals.

The hearing about the lawsuit filed Monday will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday in federal court in Winston-Salem.

The NAACP's lawsuit zeroes in on Cumberland, Moore and Beaufort counties, where thousands of voters' names have been challenged.

Burr Apologizes For ‘Bullseye' Joke About Hillary Clinton

U.S. Sen. Richard Burr apologized Monday for saying he was surprised a magazine about guns didn't put a “bullseye” on Hillary Clinton's face.

Burr, a Republican, was answering questions in a private gathering of Republicans in Mooresville.

Burr made the comment while telling a brief anecdote after he noticed a man at the event wearing a National Rifle Association hat.

“Nothing made me feel any better than when I walked into a gun shop, I think yesterday in Oxford, and there was copy of Rifleman (the NRA's official magazine) on the counter,” Burr said. “It's got a picture of Hillary Clinton on the front of it.

“I was a little bit shocked that it didn't have a bullseye on it.”

Burr's campaign issued an apology for the comment after CNN obtained the recording Monday.

“The comment I made was inappropriate, and I apologize for it,” Burr said in a written statement provided to The News & Observer.

Burr also indicated that if re-elected he would block any Supreme Court nominee put forward by Clinton.

Kaine Kicks Off Final Push For Battleground North Carolina

A final push for the battleground state of North Carolina kicked off Monday when Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine visited conservative-leaning counties.

Kaine told a crowd of several hundred in Sanford that North Carolina is a "checkmate state" because of its importance in the race.

Republican nominee Donald Trump plans appearances in Concord and Selma later this week, while President Barack Obama will campaign for Clinton in the state Wednesday and Friday. Vice President Joe Biden is scheduled to visit Tuesday.

Explosion In Alabama Shuts Gas Pipeline, Shortages Possible

An explosion has shut down a pipeline that supplies gasoline to millions of people for the second time in less than two months, raising the specter of gas shortages and price increases.

One worker was killed and a half-dozen were injured in Monday's blast in Alabama.

An earlier pipeline leak not far from Monday's explosion led Colonial Pipeline to shut down the delivery system in September. That prompted dry pumps and higher prices in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina and North Carolina.

The effects of the latest disruption aren't immediately clear.

Feds: NC Man Enters Plea In Case Involving NFL Players

Federal officials say a High Point businessman who provided financial services to professional athletes pleaded guilty to wire fraud and filing a false 2011 income tax return for misappropriating almost $3 million from clients.

Officials with the U.S. Justice Department said in a news release Monday that 46-year-old Michael Rowan provided financial and investment services to professional athletes, including players in the National Football League through two companies.

From May 2008 through August 2014, they say Rowan misappropriated almost $3 million from his clients' accounts. They say he didn't report the misappropriated funds on federal income tax returns.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
