Analysis Projects Possible $1B Gap; GOP Says It Won't Happen

A report says the new North Carolina state budget could contribute to $1 billion annual shortfalls by 2020, but Republicans who drew up the tax and spending plans say either it won't happen or will be covered by careful spending.

The shortfalls were projected in the analysis requested by state Senate Democrats and received just after the legislature adjourned their annual work session and made public Monday.

For Democrats, the report reinforces their viewpoint that the tax changes they opposed would blow holes in future budgets, requiring spending cuts, higher taxes or a combination to balance them.

Republican leaders say they have no plans to increase spending at the levels the analysis envisions. And they say tax cuts have been contributing to economic growth, which in turn generates more revenues.

NAACP Demands Burr Hold Town Hall On Health Care Bill

Demonstrators have demanded that Senator Richard Burr hold a town hall to discuss the Senate Republican health care bill.

Over 250 people gathered for a rally on Monday outside the Republican Senator's office in Winston-Salem.

The Reverend Alvin Carlisle, the president of the local chapter of the NAACP, read a letter demanding the town hall.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports the local and state NAACP chapters want a response from Burr by noon Friday.

In a statement released about two weeks ago, Burr said he supports the Republican health care bill and would continue to work to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare.

Judge Grants Release Of Video In North Carolina Shooting

A woman can be heard screaming "Please don't shoot him!" on a video recorded as a police officer wearing a body camera fatally shot a North Carolina man.

Two body camera videos of Iaroslav Mosiiuk's shooting were released Monday on a judge's order.

District Attorney R. Andrew Murray said last week that Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Officer Brian Walsh was justified in killing Mosiiuk, a mentally ill man who was pointing a loaded rifle that lacked a critical piece and didn't work.

911 Callers Saw Driver's Gun Before Police-Involved Shooting

A driver wounded in a gunfire exchange with a trooper and deputy was seen holding a gun by several 911 callers after she crashed along an interstate.

The emergency recordings released Monday by the Johnston County Sheriff describe the unusual scene Saturday morning near Benson.

A dozen people called 911 to report seeing the single-vehicle crash east of Raleigh. Several said the driver had a gun, while at least two reported the car had passed them going around 100 mph. One caller who stopped to help was advised to leave for safety reasons.
