Known for her smile, friendly hug and love of sunflowers, Anna Smith was remembered at a candlelight memorial service Sunday night.

Organizers said more than 1,000 people showed up at Creekside Park to honor the memory of Smith, whose body was found Saturday morning near the Appalachian State University campus.

Smith, an 18-year-old High Point native, was last seen on the Boone campus September 2, when she got off a university shuttle about 10:30 p.m. Her roommate reported her missing the night of September 3.

Police found Smith's body Saturday morning in a wooded area along Poplar Grove Road, about half a mile from campus. Her driver's license and student ID were recovered at that time.

Authorities have not said how Smith died, although The Charlotte Observer reported that Smith took her own life. An autopsy is scheduled for today at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.
