"Sounds of the Summer: Exploring the Tones and Colors of Organs" in Winston-Salem began June 9th, with a recital on the 1971 Charles W. McManis Organ at the Gemeinhaus in Historic Bethabara Park, by organist Timothy Olsen.
"Sounds of the Summer" continues through August 19th and along the way organ lovers sample from the Grooms and Payne instrument at First Baptist Church, the Skinner and Fisk organs at St. Paul's Episcopal, and many others, performed on by some of the Piedmont's finest keyboardists. Next week, on Monday, July 22nd at 7PM, it'll be the 1931 Austin Organ, at Centenary United Methodist Church and a program presented by organist Susan Bates. "Sounds of the Summer" co-organizer, award-winning organist Timothy Olsen has been called “among the first rank of the new generation of American organists”, and he's performed solo recitals across the country. Tim is the Kenan professor of organ at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, and associate professor of organ at Salem College in Winston-Salem. He spoke with David Ford about the mighty pipe organ.
