Black lawmakers at the North Carolina General Assembly say they'll file legislation next year requiring some or all law enforcement officers to wear body cameras. Legislators will also file other bills meant to deter profiling based on race and other factors.

North Carolina Legislative Black Caucus members made the comments Wednesday while sponsoring a panel discussion on how to prevent confrontations between police and citizens from becoming violent. The gathering follows deaths of suspects in Ferguson, Missouri, and New York.

Rep. Kelly Alexander of Charlotte says North Carolina needs to get ahead of the curve to avoid problems found in other states.

North Carolina Sheriffs Association leader Eddie Caldwell says body cameras could discourage people from giving away details from crime scenes because they may not be as forthcoming if they're being recorded.
