The Burlington-based clinical laboratory and drug development company LabCorp is producing a test for the COVID-19 coronavirus.

The testing kits were launched after the first reported cases of COVID-19 in North Carolina, and now there are seven across the state. Governor Roy Cooper has complained about there being a shortage of tests, and in a press conference said he sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services outlining the state's need.

The test, which will detect the coronavirus that causes COVID-19, is now available for physicians and health care providers in the U.S. to order.

LabCorp says they're expanding access to testing and making preparations to support the development of vaccines and treatments for the virus.

The state Department of Health and Human Services recommends taking common-sense measures to protect yourself. Wash hands frequently for at least 20 seconds, avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth, and clean and disinfect surfaces that are frequently touched.
