The Interactive Resource Center, or IRC, is looking to expand its hours of operation in Greensboro to increase services for the unhoused population.

City officials discussed ways to improve resources that help individuals in a work session on Thursday. The IRC provides showers and cleaning supplies, and doubles as a warming center during the winter.

It is currently open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The city's goal is to move it to an around-the-clock operation.

Mayor Nancy Vaughan says this is an important step.

"One of the comments that we hear most often is that once they're closed, where do people go? They've got nowhere to go," Vaughan says. "So this really helps solve that problem."

She says this could place a strain on the center, but it will benefit many.

The city looks to have this in effect alongside winter shelter programming this year.
