Heroin overdoses and deaths in High Point and in the region are growing at alarming rates.

This week, the city's police department plans a meeting with local health care professionals and agencies to address this public health problem. “Addiction has no discrimination,” says Jonathan Mindas,  a certified substance abuse counselor at Caring Services Inc. in High Point.

High Point police officers are working with other law enforcement agencies to target heroin dealers. Friday, the city's police chief announced the results of an undercover drug investigation that led to charges against 24 people and 19 arrests.

“The use of heroin has gone up in every major city.  Because High Point is considered a smaller, more close knit community, the number of deaths and overdoses are really hitting home for a lot of families.  It is shocking for the police department, the families, the schools.  It's something that we have never seen before,” says Mindas

Mindas recently spoke to WFDD's Keri Brown about how the spread of the drug has impacted High Point.  To hear more, click below.
