A recently adopted strategic plan by Forward High Point looks to create a more vibrant downtown, while also more clearly defining its boundaries.

Forward High Point President and CEO Rebekah McGee says a major goal is to increase the number of small businesses and to create a sense of place. The organization was founded in 2016 to redevelop the downtown area.

McGee says they hope to show people there is more to High Point.

"We are more than just a furniture market, and we have some great small businesses down here," she says. "So we really want to focus on getting that word out."

She says the plan was approved in September. It defines downtown as the area bordered by State Avenue in the north and Grimes Avenue in the south.

Community input also pointed to walkability and more small businesses as being important.

McGee says they are building committees to identify projects like downtown business grants, art initiatives or a potential greenway.

The organization is looking to rebrand its name to Downtown High Point as part of this effort.
