"In The Heart Of The Sea," UNCSA Presents "Arcadia," And TOW3RS

Nathaniel Philbrick and On the Same Page

In the early 1800s, Nantucket was the capital of the whaling world. Ships set sail from the island's port on two and three-year voyages, hoping to return with a ship full of oil barrels.

One of the many ships that set sail from Nantucket was The Essex. Author Nathaniel Philbrick chronicles the tale of the ship and its twenty-one crew members in his book In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex. The ship set sail in 1819, and 15 months later the Essex sank in the Pacific after it was rammed not once but twice by an enraged sperm whale. Eight men survived. The story of the Essex inspired Herman Melville's Moby Dick. 

In the Heart of the Sea is this year's Forsyth County Public Library On the Same Page selection. The library will host Nathaniel Philbrick on Sunday, October 11^th at the Arts Council Theatre. Nathaniel spoke with Bethany by phone from his home on Nantucket about this tale of survival and adventure.

UNCSA School of Drama Presents "Arcadia"

Tom Stoppard's play Arcadia is a study in chaos theory. The work weaves between the 19^th and 20^th Centuries, with characters linked by an English Country home. An early 19^th Century young genius and her tutor negotiate mathematic and scientific ideas ahead of their time, while 20^th Century scholars research the former occupants of the English home. It's a play of and on intellectual mystery and emotional investigation. 

The UNCSA School of Drama presents Tom Stoppard's Arcadia​, and performances are October 8^th and 9^th at 7:30pm and October 15^th at 7:30pm in the Catawba Theatre. The actors are seniors in the School of Drama, and this is their premier as the graduating class. Dean of the UNCSA School of Drama Carl Forsman chatted with David Ford about this production.

Since TOW3RS released their album TL;DR last fall, singer Derek Torres has brought one man and full band versions of his infectious Prince-like electronic rock to stages across the country. Winston-Salem residents have a chance to see the dynamic frontman for free this Sunday on 4th Street during Second Sundays on Fourth.
