The Guilford Green LGBTQ Center is opening the doors of its new facility today; the center is now housed on N. Greene Street in the heart of the city.

Executive Director Jennifer Ruppe says the centrally located site will be helpful in terms of visibility and says that the larger space will allow for growth and expansion of services.

“What I hope this space means for the LGBTQ community," she says, "is that no one wonders where to go or where to find LGBTQ people or resources. We want it to be part of the fabric of our community and certainly a place where everyone feels welcome.”

In addition to various meeting spaces and a lounge, the new center includes a queer library with over 350 titles and a transgender clothing closet.

Ruppe says the community rallied around the organization when it first began a capital campaign for the move last year. Guilford Green Foundation raised around $180,000 through private donations to renovate the previously abandoned site.
