Guilford College in Greensboro is once again facing a budget deficit. The school has experienced a sharp drop in enrollment, especially among adult students.
Guilford tried to balance its budget three years ago by laying off 16 employees. But the private liberal arts college is now running a budget deficit of about $2 million.
Jane Fernandes, who became Guilford's president this summer, told the News and Record of Greensboro that she expects the college's deficit could be about the same in the next academic year.
Fernandes told faculty members and other employees Wednesday about the extent of the college's fiscal problems and how she plans to deal with them.
She says that cutting by attrition will continue into next year. While there are no current plans to lay off employees, she can't rule out that option down the road.
The college employs about 400 people.
