The city of Greensboro continues to see strong growth through the first six months of 2023.

According to a report from the city's planning department, 887 acres were annexed or rezoned this year, which was 573 acres more than all of last year. This could lead to 2,482 new housing units.

According to planning director Sue Schwartz, there is tremendous demand for housing in Greensboro. She says this matches the amount of jobs coming into the city.

"Producing more housing in the right places, overall, supports a healthier economy and encourages more people to come and live in Greensboro," Schwartz says.

Over the past two and a half years, the city has approved more than 13,000 potential housing units through rezonings or annexations.

"We've had economists tell us we're in a five to seven year growth period, which is great," Schwartz says. "We haven't had something like that in a while."

Schwartz says the continued growth and investment shows faith in the city's economy — and now it's the job of officials to ensure that this positively impacts everyone.

This will help all residents to benefit from the city's growth, Schwartz says.
