The Senate has given initial approval to Senate Bill 36 Wednesday. This bill, if passed, will greatly change Greensboro's City Council.
Sen. Trudy Wade (R-Guilford), who filed the bill, told her Senate colleagues that her legislation has bipartisan local support and would provide "drastically-needed geographic diversity" on the council.
Speaking to the Senate Wednesday, Wade characterized the bill's opponents as a small vocal group who have a vested interest in limiting change.
According to the Greensboro News and Record, the Republican leaders of the Senate used a procedural move to block an attempt by Sen. Gladys Robinson (D-Guilford) to allow Greensboro voters to have the final say on any council changes.
The Senate approved the bill by a vote of 29 to 16. It will have to get a second vote before it can move on to the House.
