If Governor McCrory's request passes, the Confederate flag will no longer appear on NC license plates. The Governor plans to ask the North Carolina General Assembly to make the change.

Gov. Pat McCrory wants the legislature to pass a law that would discontinue the use of the Confederate flag on specialty license plates issued by the state.

McCrory spokesman Josh Ellis confirmed Tuesday the governor's decision to ask for the change, in light of the mass shootings in Charleston, South Carolina, and a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling. He says "the time is right."

North Carolina prints specialty plates for the Sons of Confederate Veterans, with a logo featuring the Confederate flag.
