Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina cut the ribbon Friday on a new location for its Prosperity Center located on Waughtown Street.

Sherry Carpenter, Goodwill's vice president of workforce development, says the center helped more than 200 individuals and families last year, and she expects that number will grow.  So how does it work? Carpenter says it goes beyond a simple job search.

The center started in the windowless basement of a former trucking company. Now it's in a newly constructed building beside a Goodwill retail store that opened last summer. Carpenter says the new site should be a boost for the center as well as for the southside neighborhood.

The prosperity center is a United Way collaborative partnership between Goodwill and the non-profit Financial Pathways of the Piedmont.
