The City of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County have greenlighted incentive packages totaling $5.1 million for a local manufacturer.

On Thursday, the Forsyth County Commission approved $2.7 million in incentives for Ardagh Metal Canning Beverage USA to allow it to expand its aluminum can manufacturing facility. The City of Winston-Salem awarded the company $2.4 million for the same reason earlier this week.

City officials say Ardagh is also considering sites in South Carolina and Georgia.

At Tuesday's meeting, Mayor Allen Joines encouraged company representatives to stay in Winston-Salem.

“We are deeply grateful for your presence in Winston-Salem," said Joines. "And we certainly hope you make the right decision to continue your expansion here in Winston-Salem. Thank you very much.”

The expansion will create 94 high-paying jobs and two new production lines. Ardagh's Winston-Salem canning plant already employs nearly 250 people.

The incentives would be paid out over a five-year period.
