One year after launching its Food Waste Collection Pilot Program, the city of Greensboro is celebrating its success with a new drop-off location.

The community partnership, begun in April of 2023, collects food scraps, compostable serveware, paper towels and more, and they’re processed by Triad Compost Service. According to a news release, residents have been dropping off more than 2,000 pounds of food waste each month at the current Eugene Street location.

To date, the program has diverted roughly three tons of landfill waste, saving nearly two-and-a-half metric tons of greenhouse gasses. The new location at the Congregational United Church of Christ will reach even more residents. It will also help fuel one of the church’s missions: turning food waste into compost while lowering emissions.

In the U.S. it’s estimated that between 30-40 percent of the nation’s food supply is wasted.

The new drop-off location at Congregational United Church of Christ is 400 W. Radiance Drive in Greensboro.
