The Guilford County's Chief Medical Examiner's office ruled out external trauma as a cause of death for a homeless man in Greensboro on Monday. Steve Christian collapsed while being handcuffed by police at Wesley Long Hospital.

An autopsy should determine what led to the man's death on Sunday morning following his arrest for trespassing, but it could take as long as a month to get the results, police said.

Officials say he was escorted out of the building after becoming combative toward medical staff. Greensboro police officer D.J. Williams, acting as hospital security, had cited Williams for disorderly conduct and ordered him to leave. Police say Christian came back to the hospital and became unresponsive after Williams put him in handcuffs. He was pronounced dead a few hours later.

According to the News and Record, Greensboro police have asked for assistance from the State Bureau of Investigation. Williams has been placed on administrative duty until after the investigation finishes, according to police.
