Duke Energy reports boost in wind and solar power generation in 2021

NATI HARNIK/AP

Duke Energy says it posted a 20% increase in wind and solar power last year.

In a release, the company said it produced 10,500 megawatts of renewable energy during 2021, up from 8,800 MW in 2020.

North Carolina saw the biggest increase among the six states in which the company operates. Duke Energy has built several solar farms in the state, including one in Surry County, which began operating earlier this month.

The company says it aims to reduce carbon emission by half by 2030, and to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
