The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is accepting applications from low-income people who need help paying their heating bills.  The assistance program is designed to help keep residents warm during the winter months.

DHHS will begin accepting the applications Monday through the state's Low Income Energy Assistance Program. The federally funded program provides a one-time vendor payment to help eligible households pay their heating bills.

Households must meet eligibility requirements that include age and income thresholds or having at least one disabled person receiving services through the Division of Aging and Adult Services. The disabled person must receive Supplemental Security Income, Social Security or VA disability.

Households can receive benefits from February 1st through March 31st, or until funds run out.
