Commuters will have more choices during the reconstruction project that will close a portion of Business 40 beginning this fall.

According to a news release, new funding will enhance bus routes and schedules, refurbish buses, provide subsidized vanpools, and offer transit discounts.

The Federal Highway Administration and the North Carolina Department of Transportation will provide the money. It will be divided amongst the Piedmont Authority for Regional Transportation, The Winston-Salem Transit Authority and the City of Winston-Salem.

Mayor Allen Joines praised the effort to improve commuter options, and is urging all downtown workers to consider travel alternatives during the highway shutdown.
