With the summer beach and party season upon us, the Coalition for Drug Abuse and Prevention will host a community discussion in Kernersville focused on the dangers of underage drinking.

Three young people with the Coalition's Youth Advisory Council will lead the discussion.

Ava Troxler is the executive director of the coalition. She says the topics will include such issues as the developing adolescent brain and how it can be affected by alcohol.

According to Troxler, studies indicate that more than a third of local teenagers reported having a drink within the last 30 days, and about 1 in 5 say they have had five or more  in one sitting. Troxler says that kind of drinking can lead to dangerous behaviors beyond drinking and driving.

The community conversation on underage drinking will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. in the lower level of the Masonic Hall, located at 701 South Main Street in Kernersville.
