Citizen Committee To Oversee Bond Spending

Winston-Salem's city government will appoint a citizen's committee to oversee the bond package passed last week.

The expenditure of the nearly $140 million will be shown on the city's website. The five referendums were overwhelmingly passed by city voters last week.

Assistant City Manager Ben Rowe presented the ideas Monday at a meeting of the finance committee of the Winston-Salem City Council. According to the Winston-Salem Journal, the finance committee endorsed the oversight appointment idea and sent the proposal to the full city council meeting scheduled for Nov. 17.

Rowe said the bond-tracking program on the website would be updated as the projects went forward, letting people see the progress on bond spending in their neighborhoods.

Mayor Allen Joines noted that the passage of the bonds by wide margins shows that the city has a solid plan.
