“Original music written in the classic salsa style”, that's what the band Bio Ritmo brings to Winston-Salem this weekend as part of Second Sundays on Fourth.

Afro-Caribbeans who have migrated to the States enrich every aspect of the arts here, and Bio Ritmo connects us all to Latin dance music and its shift from the big-band mambos of the 1950s to the cutting-edge sounds and smaller bands that began appearing a couple of decades later in New York.

At its core, Bio Ritmo brings supreme musicianship, a powerful rhythm section, and tight horn arrangements that they've polished over many years. Behind many of those stellar arrangements is keyboardist, arranger and manager Marlysse Simmons. She spoke with David Ford by phone from her home in Virginia.

Marlysse and her 12 bandmates will perform in the Triad this weekend June 14th courtesy of Second Sundays on Fourth, from 4-6:00 on 4th street in downtown Winston. The music kicks off at 3:00 with Enrichment Center Percussion Ensemble.  The event is free and family friendly. In today's show, we sample from Bio Ritmo's 2014 release Se Les Olvido.
