A local post office once eyed for closure could be getting a new name.

The post office under consideration is in downtown Winston-Salem. U.S. 12th District Representative Alma Adams introduced the bill last week that would name the Town Run Lane post office after Maya Angelou.

Angelou was an internationally renowned poet and had been a professor of American studies at Wake Forest for more than three decades. She died in her Winston-Salem home last year at 86.

The post office that may bear her name was on a list of offices the U.S. Postal Service considered for possible closing. That was six years ago, but no action was taken. The downtown area around the post office has seen considerable residential and commercial growth since then.

Adams says renaming the post office for Angelou is a way to honor her lifelong achievements and her contributions to the community.
