Across the Blue Ridge #96 - The Guitar & Southern Mountain Music

The Crooked Road, Virginia's Heritage Music Trail, has released a two-CD album titled “A Century of Heritage Guitar Music”.  The 52 tracks include historic sides from the earliest days of recordings featuring Blue Ridge area artists, plus songs and tunes from the LP era and new cuts specifically recorded for this album.   We hear a broad range of styles and settings reflecting the guitar's remarkable versatility and its eager adoption by mountain musicians after it became readily available in the 1920s through mail-order catalogs and other sources.  ATBR host Paul Brown talks with Jack Hinshelwood, the executive director of The Crooked Road, about the album, the artists, and the guitar's place in the evolution of southern mountain music.   That's not all for this week.  In the first section of the show, we have our usual powerful selection of old-time, bluegrass, gospel and blues music to keep your toes tapping and your mind engaged.
