Across the Blue Ridge #92 - Mountain Classics, Love Songs, and A New Independent Film

3:00pm Sep 22, 2017
Angus MacLachlan (left) of Winston-Salem, NC, wrote and directed the new independent film Abundant Acreage Available, set in rural North Carolina. Jeffrey Dean Foster, also of Winston-Salem, created the music. They discuss the story, the creative process, the use of sound, and music traditions on this Across the Blue Ridge episode.
Paul Brown

This week we hear a selection of classic and new love songs, our artists ranging from Wilmer Watts, an early banjo songster and recording artist, to IBMA Bluegrass Hall of Fame inductee Alice Gerrard.  There’s mountain music of southwestern Virginia from Roscoe Russell, Glen Neaves and Turner Foddrell.  And, as the new independent film Abundant Acreage Available makes its North Carolina and New York debuts, we hear a music-filled conversation with the film’s writer/director, Angus MacLachlan, and the creator of its music, Jeffrey Dean Foster.  The film tells a story of doubt, regret, reckoning, and hope, set on an East Bend, North Carolina farm.  MacLachlan and Foster discuss with ATBR host Paul Brown the development of the musical and ambient sound components of the film, and how they relate to the telling of a complex and subtle story.
