North Carolina A&T State University and the city of Greensboro have reached a deal on War Memorial Stadium. Officials hope an upgraded stadium will be a catalyst for the area.
A&T Chancellor Harold Martin said the university will pay $2.5 million toward preserving and renovating the ballpark where former New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter spent part of his minor-league career.
The News and Record of Greensboro reports the city will contribute $1.5 million toward repairs and transfer ownership of the stadium to the historically black college.
Greensboro World War Memorial Stadium opened in 1926. It sits close to the A&T campus and is the home stadium for the university's baseball team. The stadium hosted minor league baseball games through the 2004 season. It's one of the few remaining athletic structures in the U.S. to commemorate World War I.
Derek Jeter played there as a member of the minor league Greensboro Hornets.
