A fire at an apartment building in Winston-Salem Sunday afternoon killed one man, and left 11 people homeless.

Ralph Phillips, 55, died in the fire that started in his apartment at Sherwood Station Apartments near Robinhood and Polo Roads.   When firefighters arrived on the scene at 2:05 p.m., Phillips' apartment was fully engulfed in flames, and fire department spokesmen said, heavy flames and smoke were coming out the front window. The fire spread into the upstairs apartments, stairwell and attic.

Eight apartments were affected by the fire; several were gutted.  A report from Fox 8 News says the only fatality, Phillips, was confined to a wheelchair.

The Red Cross and Sherwood Oaks Apartment Management are working together to help in placement of the 11 people who lost their homes in the fire.  Pike Electric responded and disconnected the power to the apartment.
