Several local businesses, non-profit organizations and individuals were honored this week for their exemplary contributions to sustainability in Forsyth County.

The Winston-Salem Sustainability Resource Center held their first annual Sustainable Business Awards Wednesday evening at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, SECCA.

There were four winners and four honorable mentions. Megan Anderson is chair of the sustainable business awards. She says the nominees had to complete an application and show measurable outcomes. Anderson says some of the areas used during the judging process included waste prevention, recycling and transportation.

Besides Wexford Development and The Triad Community Kitchen, Inside Out Designs also won a sustainable business award. Marcus Wright, a Wake Forest University Professor won the Spirit of the Community Award for his efforts in helping start many sustainability initiatives in the area.

Each winner received a hand-made glass award made out of re-purposed materials by The Olio in Winston-Salem. The Olio is a non-profit hot glassblowing program for youth and the community.
