Immigration Reform May Be Off the Table for Another Year

Former Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff was in North Carolina this week to discuss immigration reform.  In 2007, Chertoff was a lead negotiator in the attempt to reform immigration laws, and helped develop national border security and immigration policy.  Chertoff says he supports using an existing statute called ‘temporary protected status' to allow those in the country illegally to move forward toward citizenship.

In June this year, the U-S Senate passed a new immigration reform.  For a closer look at what this bill would do, WFDD invited Wake Forest political science professors David Coates and Peter Siavellis into the studio; in 2008 they hosted a conference called “Getting Immigration Right.”

U.S. House Speaker John Boehner has said he won't bring the immigration reform bill to the floor unless a majority of Republican representatives support it. Meanwhile, pending action over Syria's use of chemical weapons may also sideline reform for good this year.
