You can ask any middle schooler to name an athlete and they can name 10, but you ask them to name a single living scientist and the chance of them answering that question is slim to none.

Science is not for Albert Einstein type characters. This is for everyone.

Recent football-related stories have exposed the prevalence of concussions and long term brain injuries. Participation in youth leagues may be declining due to this.

The internet is filled predictions of the impending foot-pocalypse; the decline of the NFL, as it erodes from the bottom up. In North Carolina we love our football, so we need to put aside the hysteria. There has to be a way to reduce the risk of injury while keeping the game alive.

We all know well by now that our smallest actions can have a consequence on the environment. While we often think of long term effects on climate, many of us overlook the immediate local impact. In this second Earth Day series installment of SciWorks Radio, we spoke with Lorelei Elkins, Program Coordinator at Triad Air Awareness, based in the Forsyth County Office of Environmental Assistance and Protection.

  Today we're talking about an arms race that's been escalating in our skies - for about 65 million years. The war between Bats and moths is driven by natural selection, which is the engine of evolution. This is how it 

  works: An individual organism is born with a mutation that gives it an advantage for survival. Maybe its better at finding food or avoiding predators, but it lives longer and produces more offspring.

  Our culture has an insatiable appetite for energy. As we face challenges with our traditional sources, and imperfections with immediate alternatives, we need to start looking for options to supplement an all-in approach.

When you look around you there's plenty of power to be had that you're ignoring. Right now with your heart beating and you breathing you're making a hundred watts of power. There's power everywhere you look. The light bulbs that are lighting the room, that has power and it's hitting the walls. What if that power could be collected easily? I'm telling you the can be, and we can do it with something that looks exactly like the shirt on your back right now.

North Carolina ranks among the top states in the country for biodiversity. That is, the amount of different living species within a given area. There are many reasons for this, and we're going to discover some of them from the ground up. Literally.

From a geologic perspective, we don't usually think about the North Carolina Piedmont as being very exciting. There are no tall mountains or volcanoes right nearby.
