Officials at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill are banning students from traveling to three countries due to concerns about Ebola. It's an effort to protect students and staff from the virus.
A message distributed campus-wide Wednesday says students cannot travel to Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea. But university officials say faculty and staff can, as long as they get permission from their deans and the provost before traveling to those countries.
The message was distributed by Chancellor Carol Folt and Bill Roper, dean of the UNC School of Medicine and chief executive officer of the UNC Healthcare System. Folt and Roper say they're aware that international students have ties to these countries but advise them to not visit until the epidemic is over.
Medical experts say people infected with Ebola are not contagious until they begin to show symptoms. Symptoms can include fever, headache, muscle pain, and unexplained bleeding or bruising.
