Three North Carolina college presidents are among the highest-paid university leaders in the country. 

The latest annual report from the Chronicle of Higher Education discloses executive compensation at colleges and universities for 2014.

The report shows that Nathan Hatch, Wake Forest University's president since 2005, ranked 32nd in the nation with a package of just over a million dollars. High Point University President Nido Qubein was not far behind, ranking 38th.

Duke University President Richard Brodhead, who plans to retire this summer, was 26th on the list, earning $1.2 million.

According to The News and Record of Greensboro, the review focused on 500 private colleges with the largest endowments. The average pay package was about $490,000, which often includes a housing and vehicle allowance.

The top-paid executive was Jack P.Varsalona, who was compensated almost $5.5 million as president of Wilmington University in Delaware.
