The search to find a new leader to take the reins of WinstonSalem State University got under way Monday.

Current chancellor Donald Reaves announced last month that he will retire at the end of the year. He has been chancellor since 2007. University of North Carolina System President Tom Ross was among those on hand in Greensboro for the search committee’s first meeting Monday.

Aaron Singleton, a university spokesperson, says the committee represents a cross section of the community.

Under Reaves' tenure, the university improved graduation and retention rates and the campus had a significant makeover. Singleton says after his retirement becomes official, Reaves will take a sabbatical and then return to teaching political science at WSSU.
