Several dozen protesters shut down a portion of Market Street in downtown Greensboro Wednesday night. The demonstrators were upset over a grand jury's decision not to indict a white police officer who killed a black man in New York City.

The demonstrators gathered hours after a grand jury declined to indict NYPD officer Daniel Pantaleo who killed 43-year-old Eric Garner in July after placing him in a chokehold. The incident was caught on video.

That decision came a little more than a week after a grand jury in Missouri refused to indict Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson, who is white, in the August shooting death of unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown, who was black.

The protesters did not have a permit, but Deputy Police Chief James Hinson told the News and Record of Greensboro that the decision had been made to let them be heard. Hinson said his department's job was to make sure the protest ended peacefully.

Police redirected traffic, which was backed up along Market Street.

The protesters marched to City Hall, where demonstrators took turns speaking out.
