A portion of Interstate 85 in Guilford County has been named after former U.S. Rep. Howard Coble.

The section of the highway is between Interstate 40 and Alamance Church Road, the site of Coble's childhood home.

Coble died last year after battling skin cancer for more than a decade. He represented the state's 6th District for 30 years.

The News and Record of Greensboro reports Gov. Pat McCrory joined the North Carolina Board of Transportation on Thursday to commemorate the naming of the interstate. McCrory called Coble an amazing congressman who set the standard for sincerity. He said he considered Coble a mentor and friend.
