The N.C. NAACP will hold several events this week in Winston-Salem to draw attention to an upcoming trial focusing on the state's voter ID law.
The week's events will lead up to a march and rally next Monday through the city's downtown. July 13 is slated to be the first day of a trial in U.S. District Court in Winston-Salem about the constitutionality of the state's voter ID law.
The NAACP and other plaintiffs are challenging the law, arguing that it violates the 14th and 15th amendments and the Voting Rights Act. Gov. Pat McCrory and the State Board of Elections are the defendants.
The Winston-Salem Journal reports that in addition to the march and rally, members of the City Council will host community forums this week throughout the city.
The Winston-Salem chapter of the NAACP will hold a welcome reception on Saturday, and a special mass worship service will be held Sunday evening.
